World Water Day 2017 – Walk for Water

BILLINGS, March 28, 2017 – Local non-profit organization, Hope 2 One Life, Inc., will host the 10th Annual "Walk for Water" at Rocky Mountain College Bair Student Center on April 22, 2017. Registration for the event begins at 9:30 a.m., with the walk beginning at 10:00 a.m.

World Water Day is an international day of observance and opportunity to learn more about water-related issues, be inspired to tell others, and take action to make a difference. Since the United Nations designation in 1992, World Water Day is celebrated all over the world by tens of thousands of individuals and organizations. This is the only event of its kind in Montana, which is held in partnership with the Rocky Mountain College Student Environmental Club and The Institute for Peace Studies. “Wastewater” is this year’s theme and highlights how safely managed wastewater can be a sustainable source of water, energy, nutrients, and recoverable materials.

“Why Waste Water?,” is about reducing and reusing wastewater. In developing countries, the vast majority of all the wastewater from our cities, villages, industry, and agriculture flows back to nature without being treated or reused – polluting the environment, with the loss of valuable nutrients and other recoverable materials. While there are examples of water recycling and reuse in the U.S., most is treated to meet minimum required standards and discharged to water bodies from which it came. Roughly 95 percent of municipal water supplies are discharged and only 5 percent consumed. Great opportunities exist for recycling storm water runoff which is a significant pollutant of natural waterways according to www.worldwaterday.org.

The “Walk for Water” trek consists of a 1.5 mile interactive walk with demonstrations such as the Yellowstone River Stream, Bio Sand Water filters, Hand washing and Sanitation, Drip Irrigation, and more. Participants are encouraged to collect fact cards and play a game. Fun for the whole family and it is a no-admission event. Following the walk, a multi-media forum will take place, as well as an opportunity to view a documentary and purchase international crafts for various vendors including: Family Empowerment Uganda. Enjoy Starbucks Coffee, Great American Bagels, and Lucky's Market Fruit. T-shirts from Mosaic Threads will also be for sale for $10. Volunteers are needed and will receive a free T-shirt.

The major sponsors who have made this free awareness community event possible Include: St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation, Spence Accounts, Terry and Rogers Fettig.

In addition, several local nonprofit organizations showcase their water works, raise awareness and fundraise at this event. They are as follows:
