Rocky Mountain College’s 2019 Alumni Award recipients to be recognized during 110th Candlelight Dinner

BILLINGS, November 28, 2018 – Rocky Mountain College is honored to announce the recipients of the College’s 2019 Alumni Awards. Dr. Will Tantum (‘09), John Goodheart (‘03), and Dr. Dave Shenton will be recognized at the 110th Candlelight Dinner, which will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at 5:30 p.m.

Rocky Mountain College offers three alumni awards, which are given to alumni and supporters of RMC for personal success and dedication to the College and its programs. The contributions made by the honorees to the Rocky Mountain College community demonstrate the selflessness, dedication, and forward focus that were central to the first Candlelight Dinner.

Outstanding Young Alumni Award - Dr. Will Tantum (‘09)
Shortly after graduating from Southern College of Optometry in 2014, Dr. Will Tantum purchased a 2,000-square-foot eye care practice in Maryville, Tenn. In just 14 months, Dr. Tantum’s small business, originally located in a strip mall, expanded into a state-of-the-art 10,000-square-foot eye care clinic. In 2014, Dr. Tantum also created “The Love Project,” a program dedicated to providing eyewear and eye care to individuals in need. Today, the program includes Love Haiti, which refurbishes gently used eyewear for Haitians in need; Love First Responders, which raises money for local law enforcement; and Love Eye Care + Eyewear @ BCEC, which provides no-cost eyewear and eye care to people with barriers.

Distinguished Alumni Award - John Goodheart (‘03)
John Goodheart has an immense passion for music and education. Goodheart continuously provides students with experiential learning opportunities in the Billings school district, and emphasizes exploration of the creative process. Goodheart’s impact expands beyond the classroom as he delivers the same level of commitment by making a difference in his church community. John has graciously dedicated countless hours to the remodel of Peace Lutheran’s sanctuary, teaches confirmation, ran a youth praise team for five years, and is active in the annual youth retreat, Chrysalis.

Spirit of Candlelight Award - Dr. Dave Shenton
Driven by a fondness for the region and a passion for outdoor recreation, Dr. Dave Shenton came to Montana in the early 1990s. Soon after moving to Billings, Dr. Shenton found a second home at Rocky Mountain College as the team physician to the Battlin’ Bears and as a leader and instructor in the Physician Assistant program. Dr. Shenton’s career within orthopedic surgery and sports medicine spans decades. Today, Dr. Shenton recently retired from Ortho Montana and continues to serve Rocky Mountain College by demonstrating a life-long focus on health and education.
